Noel, Christmas, Yuletide,
shepherds shepherding pastures wide.
No bright star to act as a guide;
to Bethlehem not a donkey ride.
Mary’s in a motel; no room in the hotel;
Joseph’s left her high and dry:
he heard her story- “one big fat lie.
Yeah right, you know what? Goodbye.”
The furious carpenter divorced the bride.
“Mother, help me!” Mary cried,
braving the conventions she’d defied.
Alone in the motel, disaster total.
A zero sum game and no Messiah-
Mary is deserted but no pariah-
marries a rebbe, sings in the shul choir.
The world stayed Jewish-who’d have thought?
Awaiting the Messiah, life far less fraught:
no inquisition, no Crusades, no Holocaust…
Yiddish, chicken soup with kneidlach, (vegetarian?) wurst?
